A virtual machine (VM) is a software implementation of a computer that executes programs like a physical machine. It provides a complete system platform that supports the execution of a complete operating system (OS). An essential characteristic of a virtual machine is that the software running inside is limited to the resources and abstractions provided by the virtual machine–it cannot break out of its virtual world
Huh? Why would we possibly want to take a perfectly good computer and build a pretend computer inside it? One example might be security– decreasing the chance of getting a worm or virus while Internet surfing. Another might be to use a program that doesn’t run on the operating system that is installed on your computer. Our February General Meeting speaker, Michael Nall, will tell us why and how we would do those things and how they can increase our online security and effectiveness.
Michael lives in Pacific Grove, but his consulting firm is headquartered in Tracy, CA. He is co-founder of YourNewDesktop, a company committed to delivering technology solutions for small to medium size businesses. They specialize in setting up custom server and computer systems, including security, antivirus, antispam, secure networks, VOIP, and control over installed software.
Michael has been in computers since getting his first machine, an Apple 2. He has great experience working in large corporate environments, in positions such as Director of Engineering, and has engineered systems supporting tens of thousands of employees.
He is certified by Microsoft as a Small Business Specialist, System Administrator (MCSA), and System Engineer (MCSE).
To learn more about its business solutions, services, and training, check his company’s website at yournewdesktop.com. To submit questions in advance, contact Michael at michael@yournewdesktop.com
